Paeoniaceae – Peony Family

Plant Family

Paeoniaceae – Peony Family

Paeoniaceae is a beautiful family of flowering plants commonly called Peony or Peonies. The family has a single genus called Paeonia that currently has about 33 defined species, although as most plant Taxonomy, it is a work in progress.

They include some of the most stunningly beautiful flower blooms that are equally admired in the herbaceous borders of formal gardens, sprawling cottage gardens, stand alone feature plants, pot plants or cut flowers for the indoor centre piece.

The Paeoniaceae plant family is native of temperate regions of Europe, Asia and Western North America. These are deciduous shrubs that will die back and winter underground in the thick roots below.

Most are perennial and come back without much attention by human hand, provided they are in their preferred environmental window. When they do flower they are stunning but sadly it is a fleeting visit that needs to be captured when they peak.
